Use Google Drawing for Student Seating Chart!

I spent this morning creating directions on how to use our free online grading platform for teachers at our school. In the past, the teachers were given the option to use our online grading platform or retain their old desktop software. This year, however, our new principal wants all content area subjects to use the same system.

As I wrote the tech directions, complete with animated gifs, I replayed my colleagues' conversations and concerns. The reasons why some teachers stayed with the antiquated desktop software include 1) they used Clickers and could do mass imports of the assessment grades into the desktop version, 2) they were waiting for the perfect program that translated parent messages into Spanish, and/or 3) they liked the flexible seating chart.

But with Google Drive and our free online grading program, we can do all those things FOR FREE!

Below is the shortened list of  reasons I wrote to convince all of my colleagues, not just the majority of them, to move over to our free online grading program. The very last bullet is the focus of this blog post.

  • The Alice Keeler Gradebook Split Chrome Extension makes transferring marks from Google Classroom and to the online grading platform easy.
  • There is no need to use Clickers because the online grading program has a free multiple choice quiz app.
  • The online grading program does not have a translation feature; however, Google Documents does. While no automatic translation service is ever perfect, the Translate Document feature under Tools in a Google Document will help us better communicate with non-English speaking parents. We can copy/paste the English and Spanish translations into our message. Please compare my 2015 Letter to Students in English and Spanish. As a fluent Spanish speaker, I know that the Spanish translation contains mistakes; however, the translation is understandable.
  • The free online grading program does not have a flexible seating chart; however, Google Drawing is a sensible solution. Please click on the Example to view what can be done with Google Drawing and click on Template to Make a Copy for your personal use. I did the work for you.

Our online grading program, Google Classroom, Google Translate, and Google Drawing are powerful tools, which happen to be FREE! Use these powerful tools to make your life easier and improve teacher/parent/student communication.

(Do you think I convinced them? Did I convince you? Do you plan to use any of these resources?)
